I attended the TESOL course early in 2010, presented by TEFL/TESOL facilitator Mr Matthew van As.
Mr. Van As is an exceptional lecturer, and his commitment to excellent teaching was clear right from day one. Not only did he show dedication and creativity, but he also had wonderful rapport with the students.
Mr Van As was always well prepared for his lessons and covered the learning material systematically and with confidence. Though strict in his approach, his wonderful sense of humour made his classes informative yet fun. Mr Van As is indeed an asset to an academic environment.

I completed the TEFL course from 6th-13th March 2010. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and found it gave me an excellent foundation and introduction to teaching English as a foreign language. I wanted to complete the 2nd week too but this was unfortunately not possible due to work commitments. The course was competently planned and executed and I found it both informative and inspiring. I felt very comfortable and confident in the small group with Matthew as our tutor and really learned a great deal to prepare me for my future as a TEFL teacher. Matthew is a fantastic tutor and gave us lots of useful hints and tips aswell as guiding us step by step through the flow of a well-prepared lesson. His knowledge and patience were greatly appreciated. I would definitely recommend the course!

I attended the Cape Town School of English's TEFL course in Port Elizabeth in July 2009, with Matthew Van As being our facilitator and instructor.
I really enjoyed the course and am very glad I attended it. Not only did I learn a lot of technical information about teaching English to foreigners, but the course provided me with the practical skills and confidence to teach students. It also provided me the opportunity to practice these skills when teaching second language students at a school in Port Elizabeth.
Another aspect I benefitted from was the feedback and constructive criticism and advice from Matthew as well as the other members of the group. Due to the range of ages, experience and backgrounds they provide helpful insights they provided me with fresh viewpoints. Matthew also provided on the spot feedback, helping me to prevent and break bad habits which would have hindered real life teaching.
Here was a good balance of theoretical and technical information with practical aspects.
Overall the course was a rewarding and educational experience, and has helped me in my current position as an English teacher in Japan. Matthew's knowledge, practical experience and no nonsense approach were ideal as a facilitator.

Dear CTTTI,
Having recently completed the TESOL class given at your Cape Town TEFL Training Institute I wanted to thank Matthew Van As and his staff for providing such an exciting learning experience. The program was precise and informative; Matthew’s teaching style excellent.
With a classroom comprised of various ages, mixed experience and diverse goals, his approach provided an opportunity for us each to develop our own “voice” in an atmosphere that encouraged creativity and constructive criticism.
I believe that good teachers possess an inherent ability to relate information, and the best of those have improved this ability with knowledge and application. Matthew’s approach to teaching teachers clearly shows his affinity to both the subject and his students.

Dear Manya, Liz,
I am putting you all in touch with each other as I thoroughly enjoyed the
course given by the Cape Town TEFL Training Institute. In particular, I am
connecting you with each other because my girlfriend, Shiloh, and I are
off to Mexico in ten days to teach English at a TEFL college there! (see
www.sacharts.com/travelog )
So, there's definitely something in it. My friends who've done the same
certificate have enjoyed placement at TEFL schools all over the world and
I feel it is safe to say that the CT TEFL Training's certificates are
good and recognised. Further, I'd be so bold as to suggest that it is a
strength to my qualifications that my TEFL certificate is external to my
Rhodes education one. I venture to predict a long and happy marriage of
schools, if the parties are agreeable.
We may be interested in doing what I did last year; viz organising a class
and liaising with the CTTTI to get a lecturer up here. If so, I would highl
recommend advertising to the PGCE class about three weeks after the
Hobbiton trip to maximise enthusiasm and class size.
So, that's it from me! Keep checking on the website I listed above to see
our adventures develop and have a wonderful 2008.
All the best!
Gareth
