Travel » 10 Great Reasons to choose Cape Town!
Soak up the sun on Clifton (a small but popular beach) and the palm-fringed Camps Bay's blinding white sands or frolic in the warm waters of Muizenberg, False Bay's family beach, or admire the famous view of Table Mountain from Blouberg.
Join bustling throngs in the malls, theatres and restaurants of the ever-exciting V&A Waterfront or take a break from the hive of holiday activity in the green peace of central Cape Town's Company's Garden.
Incredible Value for Money
South Africa is great value for your money. The price of a hamburger is around US$2.50 while a sumptuous crayfish dinner can be had for only around US$8.00. You can easily afford to stand a round or two of drinks, with a beer costing around US$0.80 and a gin and tonic US$1.20. Smokers will be delighted when they are charged just US$1.50 for a packet of 20 cigarettes while motorists will also be pleasantly surprised with the price of petrol/ gasoline - at around US$0.45 per litre. Want entertainment? You can buy a theatre ticket for between US$4.50 and US$8.00 and a cinema ticket for US$3.80. There's a big incentive to take lots of holiday snaps with a 36-exposure roll of 35 mm film on sale for around US$3.00.
Great Climate
The seasons are reversed - so it's the perfect place to escape the rigours of the European winter. Even the South African winter is mild - and is an ideal time for game viewing as the more sparse vegetation makes it easier to spot wild animals. The Indian Ocean coast is warm but not humid in the winter months of June and July.
Victoria & Alfred Waterfront
One of South Africa's biggest tourist attractions. Worth visiting is the Two Oceans Aquarium as well as the Maritime Museum. Daily boat trips around the harbour and to Robben Island.
Table Mountain
Take the cable car to visit South Africa's most famous landmark. Magnificent views from the summit across the Cape Peninsula, Table Bay and Robben Island.
Cape Point
This is where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is an unspoilt stretch of land and coast with a wealth of fauna and flora. The new lighthouse is the most powerful in the world, with an electric light of 19 million candle power.
Great White Sharks
Gansbaai, just outside Cape Town is a small village known for rock and boat angling, diving and whale-watching. For the more adventurous traveller, shark-cage diving provides the opportunity to watch the great white shark feeding.
Robben Island
This barren windswept island was the prison home of former President Nelson Mandela for many years. Here you can experience the view that kept Nelson Mandela's dream of freedom for his country alive. Ferry trips are undertaken to the island and bookings must be made well in advance. Robben Island is one of South Africa's three World heritage sites.
Winelands / Wine route
South Africa produces some of the world's best wines. The magnificent farms along the wine route are popular tourist destinations. Enjoy wine-tasting, delicious meals or even horse-riding through the vineyards.
